From Employee to Entrepreneur: My Journey in Business Coaching

The Reality of Being a Business Owner:

Becoming a business owner is often romanticized as the ultimate freedom, working for yourself, setting your own hours, and building something of your own. But behind the inspirational stories and entrepreneurial buzzwords lies a reality that is far more complex. Owning a business means wearing multiple hats: strategist, marketer, salesperson, financial manager, and sometimes even customer service representative. The safety net that comes with working for someone else disappears, and every decision made directly affects your livelihood. While the rewards can be immense, so are the challenges!

One of the biggest obstacles is uncertainty - unlike traditional employment, where a paycheck arrives like clockwork, business owners must create their income. There are months of abundance and months of scarcity. The ability to adapt, pivot, and maintain confidence during slow periods is crucial. Another challenge is decision fatigue; when every detail, from pricing strategies to branding, falls on your shoulders, the weight can be overwhelming.

Beyond that, there’s the emotional aspect! Running a business can be isolating. Without a team or structure in place, you’re responsible for keeping yourself motivated, pushing through setbacks, and maintaining the discipline needed to grow. It requires a level of resilience that not everyone is prepared for.

My Story: Coaching Within a Company vs. Coaching for Myself

When I worked as a coach within a company, my role was clear-cut. I had a structured schedule, a defined list of responsibilities, and the support of a team. My job was to guide and support clients within the framework of the company’s mission and processes. There was comfort in knowing that I didn’t have to chase clients, handle marketing, or worry about operational costs. My focus was on my craft, coaching without the added responsibility of running a business.

However, as I grew professionally, I realized I wanted more control over my approach. I wanted to be able to design programs, set my pricing, and work with clients who aligned with my philosophy. That’s when I made the shift into business coaching on my own.

The transition was eye-opening. Suddenly, I wasn’t just a coach, I was a business owner. I had to figure out how to attract clients, how to structure my services, and how to price them in a way that was both competitive and sustainable. Marketing became a daily responsibility. Branding and messaging became my focus. I had to learn how to sell not just my services, but my value.

One of the biggest adjustments was accountability. In a company, my success was measured by performance reviews, KPIs, and the feedback of my managers. But as a business owner, my success was entirely self-driven. If I wasn’t signing clients, I had to look inward and ask: What am I not doing? Where do I need to adjust? There was no safety net, no fallback plan, just the determination to make it work.

The Shift in Mindset:

Going out on your own forces you to take on a different mindset. As an employee, you think in terms of tasks and execution. As a business owner, you think in terms of strategy, long-term vision, and sustainability. You stop asking, “What do I need to do today?” and start asking, “Where do I want to take this business in the next year?”

It’s a transformation that requires patience and persistence. There will be moments of self-doubt, times when you wonder if you made the right choice. But there is also an unparalleled sense of accomplishment in building something that is entirely your own.
